Crye-Leike Austin Peay Sets Goal to Raise $5000 to Benefit Local College in Need

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Associates and employees at Crye-Leike, Realtors are continuing efforts to generate funding for LeMoyne-Owen College by hosting fundraising events aimed at reducing the historically black college’s six million dollar debt.

The Crye-Leike office has a goal of raising five thousand dollars by June first, with one hundred percent of the money raised going directly to the college’s Debt Reduction Campaign. Patrice Williams, an associate at the Austin Peay office, is heading the fundraising efforts. “Our office wanted to get involved to support higher education in our community,” Williams comments, “so we decided to take action!”

LeMoyne-Owen, a private liberal arts institution, is in debt due revenue simply not keeping pace with the rising cost of the educational enterprise. The debt has prompted the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to place the school on probation for accreditation in December, according to an article in that recently appeared in The Tennessean. LeMoyne-Owen tracks its history to a school for freed slaves set up in 1862 by the American Missionary Association, a New England abolitionist group that helped free the survivors of the Amistad slave ship.
